About the event
Celebrate National Seafood Month with three UNH researchers working to bring fresh, sustainable seafood to our plates:
· Elizabeth Fairchild, research associate professor of biological sciences, will discuss how raising lumpfish could boost New England’s salmon and steelhead trout aquaculture industry. A cleanerfish, lumpfish are native to the Gulf of Maine and can keep sea lice, which threaten the health of raised salmon, under control.
· Gabriela Bradt, fisheries and aquaculture specialist for New Hampshire Sea Grant and UNH Cooperative Extension, will detail her “eat the invaders” approach to eradicating invasive green crabs. Working alongside restaurateurs and entrepreneurs, Bradt has helped put green crab on the menu and even in a craft whiskey.
· Natalie Lord, a graduate student at UNH and National Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellow, will bring a social science lens to seafood, discussing the role of social equity in marine food systems with a particular focus on gender and the role of women in the region’s oyster aquaculture industry.
